Newport is synonymous with Gilded Age opulence, and while the grand mansions of Bellevue Avenue often steal the spotlight, it’s Ocean Drive that truly captures the soul of this city-by-the-sea. This approximately 9.5 to 10-mile scenic loop, also known as “Ten Mile Drive,” offers an unparalleled journey along the commanding coastline, showcasing breathtaking ocean vistas, historic landmarks, and a serene escape from the bustling downtown.
Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1976, Ocean Drive winds its way from the southern end of Bellevue Avenue, near the intersection with Ocean Avenue and Coggeshall Avenue, and continues along the southern shore of Aquidneck Island. It’s a route where meticulously manicured lawns of sprawling estates meet dramatic rocky cliffs and pristine beaches, offering a visual symphony of natural beauty and architectural grandeur.
One of the most notable stops along Ocean Drive is Fort Adams State Park. This 19th-century coastal fortification, constructed between 1824 and 1857, is strategically located at the mouth of Newport Harbor and provides panoramic views of both Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay. Visitors can explore the fort’s tunnels and ramparts, or simply enjoy the expansive parade field, a popular spot for picnicking and taking in the maritime activity. The park also hosts the renowned Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals.
Further along the drive, the landscape opens up to reveal Brenton Point State Park. This expansive 89-acre park marks the point where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, offering truly spectacular views. It’s a favorite spot for kite flying, with the annual Newport Kite Festival held here, showcasing colorful kites dancing against the ocean breeze. The park also features the striking Portuguese Discovery Monument, a tribute to navigators and the rich heritage of the Portuguese-American community in the area.

While many of the magnificent estates along Ocean Drive remain private residences, their architectural beauty can be admired from the road. Notable among the natural attractions and accessible spots is Gooseberry Beach, a picturesque crescent of sand known for its calm waters and family-friendly atmosphere, often considered a hidden gem along the drive. Another prominent estate is “Seafair,” famously purchased by Jay Leno in late 2017. Unlike the more formal mansions on Bellevue Avenue, the homes along Ocean Drive were often designed to blend more seamlessly with the natural, rolling landscape, respecting the terrain with less ostentatious designs.
Ocean Drive offers numerous pull-offs and vantage points, perfect for photography, a leisurely stroll, or simply soaking in the salty air and the rhythmic sound of crashing waves. From the “Green Bridge” overlooking Goose Neck Cove (our favorite place to pull over), to views toward Castle Hill Lighthouse (to reach it you’ll walk a short, unmarked path off Castle Hill Inn’s drive), every turn presents a new, captivating scene. Whether by car, bicycle, or even a scenic trolley tour, Ocean Drive promises an unforgettable experience, embodying the timeless allure of Newport’s coastal charm.
