Craving Caffeine? These 7 Newport Cafés Have the Good Stuff

Newport may be small, but its coffee scene is surprisingly full-bodied. Local roasters, cozy cafés, and pastry counters line the streets near the wharves, Broadway, and Bellevue Avenue, all within an easy walk of one another. That means you can grab a latte or a fresh muffin between attractions without ever moving your car.

Empire Tea & Coffee

With one location on Broadway and another on William Street just off Bellevue Avenue, Empire Tea & Coffee roasts in-house and runs a full manual-brew bar, but the cult favorite is the Nutella Latte, which melts real Nutella into a double shot before topping with steamed milk. For something subtler, the Honey Latte uses local clover honey and Empire’s own espresso blend. Cinnamon rolls and made-to-order bagel sandwiches fly out of the pastry case by mid-morning.

Kaffeology

Set in a brick storefront on Thames Street, Kaffeology pairs specialty coffee with brunch-level food (and milkshakes!). The Pacino Milkshake, a chocolate–espresso malt topped with a mini cannoli, is a popular choice. For breakfast, they offer waffles, bowls, avocado toast, and an array of breakfast sandwiches.

Simple Merchant Coffee

This North-End multi-roaster bar prints its mantra—“Crushing espresso in Newport’s North End”—right on the wall. Expect weekly rotating single-origin shots and pour-over flights, plus comfort foods like a gooey grilled-cheese sandwich and hearty breakfast burritos.

Beaucoup Café

Part Parisian pâtisserie, part lifestyle boutique, Beaucoup turns heads with seasonal specials such as the Chocolate-Covered-Strawberry Mocha, an iced latte blended with local strawberry milk and dark-chocolate syrup. Classic almond and ham-and-Swiss croissants dominate the pastry board, baked daily at the 580 Thames kitchen.

The Nitro Bar

Born as a coffee cart, The Nitro Bar now pours its velvety nitrogen-infused cold brew from custom nitro taps at two Newport addresses—its newest café at 404 Thames Street and its roasting HQ at 2 Pond Avenue, just inland from Easton’s Beach. Obviously with a name like Nitro Bar, they offer Nitro coffee on tap!

Belle’s Café

Inside Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, Belle’s serves dockhands and yacht crews alike; an espresso machine hums beside the order window, turning out smooth cappuccinos all morning. The headline plate is the lightly dressed lobster roll, but staples like avocado toast and Nashville-style chicken sandwiches keep the line steady well past breakfast.

Springline Coffee

Springline offers coffee with a great view at the end of Bannister’s Wharf. It’s a quaint, little shop and it has outdoor seating on the water. It’s not open year-round due to its location, but when it is open it’s a must-visit spot. In addition to a full menu of coffee, they also offer herbal teas, pastries, and on-the-go sandwiches.

Whether you’re chasing a Nutella-spiked latte, a nitrogen pour that drinks like stout, or a dark roast with nautical lineage, Newport’s independent cafés deliver fresh beans and creative menus within a few scenic blocks of one another. Grab a cup, stroll to the harbor, and taste how this seaside town keeps its coffee scene as lively as its sailing season.
