The Newport Historical Society presents an engaging lecture on Thursday, May 22, 2025, exploring the complex divisions and shifting loyalties in Newport leading up to the American Revolution. Hosted at the Richard I. Burnham Resource Center located at 82 Touro Street, Newport, this insightful event highlights Newport’s significant yet often overlooked role in revolutionary history.
Newport, as one of the most important port cities in the British American colonies, experienced intense conflict over British trade regulations and taxation. While some residents actively resisted British authority through protests, others maintained strong allegiance to the Crown. Presented by exhibit curator Dr. Don Johnson, this lecture will examine the political, economic, and social factors influencing Newporters’ loyalties during this crucial period. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, attendees will gain fresh perspectives on Newport’s historical dynamics and the challenging decisions faced by its inhabitants.
