Norman Bird Sanctuary presents an immersive educational experience exploring the fascinating world of fungi on May 22, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The event will begin with an engaging presentation showcasing the incredible diversity of fungi, their ecological importance, and how to appreciate them responsibly. Participants will be treated to an informative photographic tour highlighting various fungi species and their roles within ecosystems.
After the presentation, attendees will embark on a guided walk along the Sanctuary trails, observing fungi in their natural environment and learning about other intriguing elements of the local ecosystem. Whether you’re an experienced nature lover or new to the world of fungi, this event offers an enriching opportunity to connect deeply with nature.

The program will be led by Deana Thomas, an acclaimed fungi expert and biology enthusiast from North Scituate. Recognized for her dedication to conservation and sustainable practices, Deana received the RIFCO Friend of the Forest Award in 2024. She actively cultivates shiitake mushrooms and organic produce at her farm, Bide a Wee Farm.
