The Newport Historical Society will present a lecture titled “Richard Morris Hunt: Before the Breakers” by Mike Franco on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 6:30pm, focusing on Hunt’s early career. Renowned for his Beaux Arts mansions like Marble House and The Breakers, Hunt’s work prior to 1875 offers a glimpse into a different aspect of his architectural contributions during the onset of the Gilded Age. The presentation will examine 24 of Hunt’s projects in Newport between 1860 and 1873, highlighting the contrast between his early, more picturesque designs and his later opulent creations. Of these buildings, twelve remain, while the others were destroyed by fire or demolished.
Mike Franco, a trial lawyer from Massachusetts with a deep interest in Newport’s history and architecture, will conduct the talk. Franco, who resides in a historic Newport home, also manages the Facebook group “Newport, Lost & Found,” dedicated to the city’s Gilded Age architecture.
The event is scheduled at the NHS Resource Center, 82 Touro Street, Newport, RI. A cocktail reception starting at 5:30pm precedes the lecture, which begins at 6:30pm. Ticket prices are $20 for the general public and $15 for Newport Historical Society members and active-duty military.
Tickets are available for purchase at the Newport Historical Society’s website.
